In times of corona, we as IT service providers were and still are important. For example, when it comes to video conferencing, we quickly supported two schools with the open source solution "Big Blue Button". This makes public institutions in particular independent of the large corporations when it comes to remote teaching and video conferencing. Not only technologically, but also in terms of the way knowledge is imparted.
"Of course, commercial e-learning solutions always create a certain dependency - I think it's better if we as schools become active ourselves here, and open source fits in very well with this attitude," is how Christian Schlag, head of level at the Carlo Mierendorff School in Frankfurt, describes the situation. Another plus point for him is that the pupils can be actively involved in setting up the infrastructure when using open source.
We were looking for a reliable alternative that we could control ourselves. Thanks to punkt.de and Big Blue Button, we were able to communicate securely within the school management team and with individual students via video.

Big Blue Button is an open source software that is particularly suitable for video-based lessons, workshops, lectures and the like (one-to-many). It can be set up on your own server and there are providers who do the work for you.
In addition to the Carlo Mierendorff School, we also supported the Paul Hindemith School in Frankfurt quickly and unbureaucratically with the Big Blue Button solution. But we were also able to help out within the TYPO3 community.

We have not only supported schools in terms of "corona technology". Meetings of open source communities are a very important part of the open source world - of course also in the TYPO3 community, in which we are involved as punkt.de. It is a great pity when the personal meetings have to be canceled due to the Corona measures.
In order to organize an event during the first lockdown, we spontaneously organized the "TYPO3 Tech Summer" - with only about three weeks of preparation time. Big Blue Button was also used here.
Marco Tiel, a member of the Marketing & Events team at TYPO3 GmbH, was very impressed with the BBB solution: "I had a positive experience and found the front end very inviting and clear. The change of moderators also worked really well." Despite the short preparation time and the participation of many guests, BBB proved to be excellent. The performance was right. Not all of the options were even used at the TYPO3 Tech Summer. For example, Big Blue Button offers the option of broadcasting the stream publicly, a sophisticated "blackboard" function and much more.
