20 years of punkt.de - 20 years of web and hosting

From the very beginning, the business area of punkt.de has been all about the web. Back then with dedicated lines, today we create complex web applications for our customers and also offer customized hosting solutions. And we do this with success and pleasure at work.

20 years is a reason to celebrate

There are many reasons to celebrate. The fact that a company can celebrate its 20th anniversary is a particularly good one, in my opinion. We are proud that we were able to celebrate this anniversary this year with a big party. In addition to customers and partners with whom we have a good relationship, Kasper Skårhøj, the founder of TYPO3, was also our guest of honor. He opened the event with a very personal speech and with anecdotes and pictures of our time together.

After another speech about the history of our company (which I would also like to briefly summarize in this article) and a look into the future, we celebrated with food and drink, discussed and then danced the night away. And if it was too cold on the terrace and too loud in the ballroom, you could retreat to an adjoining room and get inspiration for new projects. This was because we had set up a kind of competence show where we presented the services we use to advance our customers.

History of the punkt.de

Founded under the name WEB Internet Services GbR, the employees initially worked on the creation of websites based on HTML 3 and supported customers in the areas of dedicated lines and security. 2 years later, the GbR became a GmbH and the first website project went online: fertiggarage.de

The change of name to punkt.de took place in 2001 and in 2003 punkt.de added the then still relatively unknown content management system TYPO3 to its portfolio. Since then, we have been heavily involved in the TYPO3 community. For example, we initiated the organization of the first T3CON as an international TYPO3 conference in Karlsruhe, which has been held annually ever since. In addition, Managing Director Jürgen Egeling was Chairman of the TYPO3 Association for three years, whose marketing team punkt.de has been actively supporting for two years. Since 2014, we have also had the Neos content management system on board and are proud that two of our colleagues have shown their commitment to this system by further developing it as core developer teams.

in 2010, we decided to introduce Scrum and completely implemented a partner portal for our client Deutsche Post using the agile development method. "Convinced by the process and results, we started to transfer the principle of self-organization to the entire company in 2015 and gradually converted our company structure to self-organizing project teams," explains our Managing Director Jürgen Egeling. In addition to development, we also have many years of experience in hosting: we have been operating our own data center in Karlsruhe since 2001 and launched "punkt.de Hosting" as an independent brand this year, replacing the well-known pluspunkthosting.

Our most recent success story includes winning the TYPO3 Award 2016. We developed a web store for the children's charity nph deutschland e.V., also based in Karlsruhe(www.hilfefuerwaisenkinder.de), which enables customers not only to donate to large-scale projects but also to finance specific aid supplies. The donation store was named the best "Small Website" project at this year's T3CON. Further projects can be found in the case studies, with more to follow in the near future.

punkt.de as an employer - At home in Karlsruhe

Founded in Karlsruhe, moved several times within the city and based at Mühlburger Tor since 2008, we feel a strong connection to the city and the region. "That's why we make an active contribution to the local economy: first and foremost as an employer and training company," says Jürgen Egeling. The original three employees have now grown to 32; the proportion of women has risen continuously - today it is more than 30 percent. This is not least due to the high level of family friendliness within the company: We introduced the home office concept back in 1999; part-time and other working time models are common practice.

Since 2010, one or two students from the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW), who complete the practical part of their dual IT studies at the company, have also been an integral part of the team. One of the three students is currently in China and is completing a semester abroad. He reports on this in our blog(to the first post). As a partner company, we also support the informatikBOGY initiative (initiated by KIT Karlsruhe) and want to introduce young people to the world of computer science.
