Ardapedia is an online encyclopedia dedicated to J. R. R. Tolkien and his works. You can browse through thousands of articles and, of course—as is customary on MediaWiki—contribute content yourself.
The name Ardapedia is a combination of “Arda” (the name for Earth in Quenya, the language developed by Tolkien) and “pedia” (from the English word “encyclopedia”).
Just recently, the site’s operators decided that the site needed to be modernized from a technical standpoint. One of the goals was to be able to run the site with a responsive design on modern infrastructure. When we at punkt.de learned of this project, we were ready to help out with a virtual proServer and assist with the migration. Through our sponsorship, we were happy to contribute to providing all German-speaking Tolkien fans with a place to exchange ideas.
Our proServer
From a technical standpoint, the project didn’t present any major challenges for our proServer, as our innovative concept was designed specifically for such applications.
We maintain critical operating software—such as databases, web servers, and PHP—in a separate environment, including security updates and dependency management. Depending on the use case, we set up an appropriate configuration to run the application—in this case, Ardapedia’s MediaWiki.
