That was Girls' Day 2025 at punkt.de

Under the motto "Programming is Fun!," we were able to share our enthusiasm for IT and programming with our 8 participants.

As an IT company, we at punkt.de are committed to promoting women in IT.

We aim to employ women in all areas of our company. We believe that a balanced gender ratio improves teamwork, broadens perspectives, and ultimately increases team efficiency. That’s another reason why Girls’ Day is so important to us. It’s the perfect opportunity for young girls to get a taste of the IT world and become excited about the diversity in computer science.

This year, our Girls’ Day program was aimed at girls between the ages of 12 and 15. Using a microcomputer called the Microbit as an example, we were able to show the eight participants just how much is actually possible with computers.

Girls' Day on April 3, 2025

At our two locations in Karlsruhe and Frankfurt am Main, we welcomed four participants at each. This year in particular, there was an enormous rush for the available spots. Nevertheless, keeping the groups small was well received.

At the start of the day, everyone had a chance to get to know one another, and the basics of the micro:bit were explained. Even at this early stage, building blocks like loops and conditional statements were used to create simple games and enable the first exchanges of messages between the devices.

After lunch, the participants were able to dive really deep into the subject matter and even tackle more complex tasks.

I thought it was cool that we got an overview first and then were able to just try it out for ourselves.

Cooperative Game

A group of girls is sitting together in a meeting room. They each have a laptop in front of them, which they use to operate the microcontrollers.

As an example, the players worked together to program a cooperative game based on the well-known "Heads Guess":

One player’s micro:bit selected an animal without revealing which one. The other players received the selected animal as a text message on their own controllers.

The player’s task was then to guess this animal by asking everyone else yes/no questions.

This simple game already incorporates a great many programming techniques, all of which the players were able to master.

Conclusion

First, we’d like to thank all the girls. We had an absolute blast that day, too, and we’re very happy with how the event went. A big thank you also goes out to the parents, all of whom were very friendly and open in their interactions with us.

The feedback from our participants was overwhelmingly positive, so we’re already looking forward to Girls’ Day 2026.

I thought it was great because everything was explained really well, I learned a lot, and the atmosphere was great.
