Learn moreVolume Graphics' new website is fast, intuitive, and responsive

A comprehensive relaunch, the integration of a new corporate identity (CI), and a clearly defined deadline of less than two months—these are the key details of the first joint project between Volume Graphics GmbH and punkt.de. Volume Graphics came to punkt.de on a recommendation. And just in time for Control, the international trade fair for quality assurance held in Stuttgart in May 2017, Volume Graphics’ new website went live.
The software developed by Volume Graphics is used to analyze and visualize data from industrial computed tomography (CT). Materials are X-rayed, examined using the software, and displayed in 3D in a clear and visually appealing way. This makes material defects visible, allows for the precise measurement of individual components, and even enables the simulation of forces acting on the material to test the effects of tension and compression. This is high-tech at its finest. The software is used, among other things, in quality assurance for everything from massive engine blocks to the tiniest plastic connectors—and almost everything in between. No wonder, then, that the software from this Heidelberg-based company ranks among the world’s leading solutions for the analysis and visualization of industrial CT data. And the images produced by the software are real eye-catchers!
Having grown over the years, however, the website had not only become slow but also failed to adequately reflect the company’s state-of-the-art products. That’s why Volume Graphics decided to relaunch it. The goal? In addition to meeting a whole range of technical requirements, the website also needed a visual makeover. It was to become just as eye-catching as the software’s 3D visualizations!
A clear and appealing presentation of the product range, as well as the integration of the newly created corporate identity (CI), were at the heart ofpunkt de’s project. Other priorities included designing the website so that it would display attractively and scale correctly on all devices (responsive web design), as well as implementing fundamental measures to improve performance. In short: a complex undertaking in which the entire website was redesigned from the ground up.
Furthermore, there were just 48 days between the first meeting and the planned go-live date. A rapid time-to-market, as they say these days.

This project was challenging—technically, visually, and on a human level. There were many locations and work sites; everything was in flux right up until the clearly defined deadline.
The Volume Graphics website was intended to have a fresh and uncluttered look. The challenge was to present extensive content in a space-efficient way. We were provided with the layout—a clean tile design that gives the graphic elements plenty of breathing room and is meant to adapt dynamically and fluidly. To ensure clarity, we used multi-level accordions that can be expanded and collapsed with a single click.
There were numerous reasons to use the Neos Content Management System (CMS), both in terms of programming and editorial maintenance. What makes Neos special is, above all, its ease of use. It is an exceptionally user-friendly CMS that can be operated intuitively. Thanks to front-end editing, users can see and adjust changes to the live page as they edit. This makes it correspondingly easy to maintain an overview—even on a website as complex as this one, with many individual elements.
Our highly qualified team came together and—under the leadership of Daniel Lienert, a Neos core developer—jointly implemented this ambitious concept.
The tight deadline only motivated me and my team even more to show that Neos can be used to get such a comprehensive web project up and running in no time.

Volume Graphics GmbH is an internationally active company whose software can analyze and visually represent objects in impressive ways. The website now conveys exactly this message. Striking images are now the focal point not only within the software but also in the web design. The website echoes the visual style of the images created with the software. It also has an “airy” feel and piques curiosity.
There have never been as many devices for browsing the internet as there are today. Responsive web design has become the standard. Every website should adapt to the size of the respective display. During development, we therefore consistently relied on responsive web design to ensure optimal usability and adaptive layout.
We paid special attention to the tiles, which dynamically adjust their size and position to the content and are designed to look stylish on all devices. This required adaptive calculation of the parameters using JavaScript.
Load times determine whether visiting a website is a pleasant or nerve-wracking experience. The Volume Graphics website is now optimized for performance. The website is cached on multiple levels, and images are automatically optimized for fast downloads—to name just two examples.
As a service for users of the analytics software, the free viewer (myVGL) is still available for download. The download service uses Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Product inquiries can be submitted via comprehensive forms, which are linked to the internal Microsoft Dynamics CRM system and the CleverReach email marketing tool.
The website is hosted on proServer, the punkt.de hosting solution specifically designed for Neos. With proServer, we bridge the gap between traditional shared hosting and high-maintenance root server solutions. The package comes equipped with the latest version of PHP and, thanks to modern services like Redis, Elasticsearch, and Varnish, natively provides everything Neos projects require.
The result: Expressive images are shown to their best advantage within the minimalist, clear structure. No matter where in the world you are, this attractive website loads in an instant. That’s why Christian Lohmüller, technical editor at Volume Graphics GmbH, sums it up: “ punkt.de has done an outstanding job. And the best part? It was a pleasure working with them. We look forward to continuing our collaboration!”
We’ve achieved our first goal: the relaunch was successfully completed and was ready just in time for the trade show. This has given us a solid technical foundation for the future. We’re already setting our sights on further goals. These include migrating the Japanese website, optimizing several forms, and showcasing our in-house training programs. We look forward to continuing our collaboration!
That was a close call. Throughout the entire process, we found punkt.de to be professional, transparent, and confident in what they do and what they’re capable of. They analyzed the many tasks at hand, discussed options with us, and coordinated efforts to work through them efficiently. A gracious and solution-oriented approach that instilled a sense of security and calm in everyone involved.
