How do I decommission a data center? A new infrastructure for avenit AG.

As an established hosting provider for sensitive and complex infrastructure, we supported the agency "avenit AG" in decommissioning its own data center and migrating its customers to our proServer architecture.

proServer offers many advantages for agencies and their clients. Learn more about our concept and how we support agencies with their infrastructure.

A New Infrastructure for avenit AG—The Starting Point!

The avenit AG is a digital agency based in Offenburg with approximately 70 employees that, in the past, hosted its clients in a dedicated area within a data center in Karlsruhe.

For a long time, the advantages of having its own infrastructure outweighed the disadvantages. However, over time, operating and maintaining its own data center ties up many valuable resources that could be put to much better use elsewhere in client projects.

At the same time, the hosting market has evolved rapidly in recent years, and eventually the costs of operation and maintenance exceed the benefits—especially when critical hardware reaches the end of its lifespan and major investments in new hardware are on the horizon.

This is exactly where avenit AG found itself, and it decided to discontinue the operation and maintenance of its own data center. This decision raised a number of questions:

  • Who will take over the operation and maintenance of the infrastructure in the future?
  • Are there providers with experience in managing a data center and migrating existing customers?
  • Who can reliably take over operations and maintenance and offer a high level of service, including SLAs?
  • What is the best architecture for our own development workflow?
  • Who understands how agencies work and can also implement individual client requests?
  • Can I plan and further develop my infrastructure in the long term with the new hosting provider?
  • Is the offer cost-effective and in the client’s best interest in terms of stability, performance, and security?

Armed with these and many other detailed questions, avenit AG set out to find a new hosting provider.

A new hosting provider? Who can provide what my agency needs?

Finding a new hosting partner to whom you can entrust your clients is not just a financial and technical decision—it’s above all a matter of trust. So it made sense to start the search within our own network and community and draw on the experiences of other agencies. That’s how avenit AG and punkt.de GmbH came together.

punkt.de GmbH has been active for over 25 years in the design and implementation of infrastructure and hosting and has earned a reputation as a reliable partner. punkt.de GmbH’s hosting services are particularly popular within the TYPO3 and Neos communities, but even outside these communities, many companies have relied on punkt.de GmbH for years when it comes to application development and custom infrastructure.

Since, in addition to technical expertise in infrastructure, a strong reputation within the community, and regional ties, the values of both agencies align, punkt.de GmbH was the perfect match for avenit AG.

In punkt.de Infrastructure, we have found a reliable partner. With the help of the experienced team at punkt.de Infrastructure, we were able to successfully achieve our goals in replacing our own infrastructure. As a result, we now combine reduced internal workload and lower risks with continued high flexibility and the latest hardware and software. With this setup, we are now well-equipped for many more exciting projects with our customers.

Shutting down your own data center? No problem—we know what we’re doing!

During the initial discussions with avenit AG, punkt.de GmbH quickly made a strong impression with its infrastructure team of DevOps and infrastructure specialists. Since we had just shut down our own data center and knew exactly where avenit AG was facing challenges and what concerns arise when migrating infrastructure, we were able to develop a highly targeted plan and build trust.

As an established hosting providerwith whom avenit AG can make long-term plans, and with our own team that handles hosting and infrastructure—thereby ensuring not only a high service level but also SLAs for avenit AG’s customers, avenit AG gains a partner that is also capable of implementing its own customers’ individual infrastructure requirements.

proServer: A Game-Changer—Full Access Without Worrying About Updates!

In order to take over the operation and maintenance of customer systems following the transition from punkt.de GmbH, it was necessary to migrate customers to the proServer architecture.

The proServer concept was developed by punkt.de GmbH based on FreeBSD and is optimized for the needs of agencies and companies seeking a less restrictive, yet secure and high-performance environment with minimal maintenance requirements.

proServer offers all the benefits of a managed server while providing root access. Perfect for every developer and the development workflow of agencies and companies. True to the motto: Full access without worrying about updates!

This approach quickly won over avenit AG and enables punkt.de GmbH to integrate customer systems into our patch day cycle.

In this process, critical components of the operating software (databases, web servers, PHP, etc.) are managed exclusively by our infrastructure team and updated once a month. Ideally, staging and production environments are set up and defined, and then gradually incorporated into the update cycle every 14 days. This gives avenit AG or the customer at least 14 days after an update to identify any errors. The updates include version and security updates. Of course, hotfixes—for example, for identified exploits—are applied immediately.

In addition to being easy to use and maintain, proServer offers several additional features. By providing separate protection for the operating software, a classic entry point for attacks is eliminated, allowing avenit AG to focus on development for its customers.

In addition, the proServer is specifically optimized for TYPO3 and Neos and delivers noticeable performance gains not only for avenit AG’s customers.

Paired with the right hardware—which we selected for avenit AG—the proServer architecture is ideal for developers and also combines performance and stability with cost-effectiveness. This is perfectly in line with the goals of avenit AG and its customers.

The new infrastructure—servers, monitoring, firewall, backup, network, Rackspace

Following an initial workshop with the infrastructure specialists at punkt.de GmbH, we determined what hardware is needed to gradually migrate existing customers to the new servers. A brief overview of the most important components can be found here:

Servers:

For the migration of existing customers, we initially planned for 6 dedicated proServer L servers with AMD Ryzen 9 processors, which are housed in a physical rack at Hetzner Online GmbH .

We have been working very successfully with Hetzner in this area for our customers for many years. This allows us to rely on reliable, high-quality hardware and be confident that the servers are located in Germany, meet all GDPR requirements, and are subject to German law.

Monitoring:

Monitoring is based on Zabbix and runs on a dedicated VM in the Hetzner Cloud. The monitoring system is continuously expanded and optimized in consultation with avenit AG.

Firewall:

For years, we have relied on the OPNsensefor years. To increase reliability, we use two servers for this purpose. We naturally handle the setup, configuration, and training for avenit AG.

Backup:

By default, we offer 7-day backups for our proServer, but we recommend using a dedicated backup server to provide up to 14 days of backups. There are no limits here; off-site or multiple backup locations are also possible.

Network:

For maximum performance, each server requires two networks (client, firewall, backup) and, of course, a subnet for IPv6 as well as a private network. For all customers who still rely on IPv4, we have, of course, also found a solution with avenit AG.

Rackspace Reservation:

To ensure that rack space does not become a limiting factor for avenit AG’s growth, we have arranged a reservation for additional server capacity in the rack at Hetzner. Long-term coordination regarding the further development and expansion of capacity is an integral part of the concept.

A cohesive concept for a trusting partnership at the highest professional level!

In addition to setting up and configuring the new infrastructure, we are, of course, also partners who work together with avenit AG to advise on and further develop the infrastructure.

For example, avenit AG has adopted our Ansible playbooks for proServer to meet the needs of its projects.

The administrators at avenit AG are in close communication with our infrastructure team and are gradually continuing the migration of their own customers to the new infrastructure.

The new infrastructure concept is a win not only for avenit AG but also for its customers. After an initial effort to migrate the customers, the operational and maintenance workload for avenit AG’s administration team has been reduced, and customer feedback following the migration has been consistently positive.

punkt.de, GmbH looks forward to continuing its collaboration and expanding the infrastructure for avenit AG and its customers.
