A relaunch for more efficiency: daring to automate

We were responsible for the relaunch of the Volume Graphics website back in 2017. After many years of continuous support, however, it was time for fundamental changes.

The aim was to efficiently manage an increasingly complex product portfolio on the content side and thus make the editors' work easier.

Greater automation of processes, new functions and a redesign were implemented, and the new site went live at the beginning of 2025.

Relaunch Volume Graphics / Hexagon Case Study

Who is Volume Graphics?

With the development of the VGSTUDIO software in 1997, Volume Graphics pioneered the field of industrial CT data visualization and analysis.

Since 2020, Volume Graphics has been part of Hexagon, a global leader in sensor, software and autonomous solutions with approximately 20,000 employees worldwide in over 50 countries and net sales of approximately EUR 3.9 billion.

The VG software suite is also the software for the analysis and visualization of industrial CT data today. Therefore, the new site is available in six languages: Chinese, German, English, French, Japanese and Korean.

A relaunch for more automation

Punkt.de GmbH has been responsible for the VGR website for over 8 years and has already already implemented the relaunch in 2017 implemented. Since then, the website has been continuously developed in line with our continuous relaunch concept.

In 2023, however, the framework conditions for VGR changed and fundamental changes in the existing CMS (Neos) for new workflows led to a further relaunch of the website being planned.

In addition to adjustments to the design, UI & UX, one of the main challenges for the relaunch was that the website was to be managed by a much smaller team of editors in the future, meaning that many editorial processes had to be automated. At the same time, of course, the quality of the content could not be allowed to suffer.

Automation - understanding and optimally implementing customer processes!

Our collaboration over the past 8 years played a decisive role in the implementation of the new workflows.

In addition to our technical expertise and knowledge of VGR's current Neos, we at punkt.de know the workflows, product portfolio and core processes of VGR very well and were able to quickly familiarize ourselves with the processes together with VGR.

The first step was to reduce the complexity of VGR's product portfolio and implement it with individual modules in Neos. A separate module was created to manage the product logic, which significantly simplifies and centralizes product management. Products no longer have to be maintained in different places. In this way, the multi-layered license models of the products can be easily maintained in the backend of Neos.

In addition, care was taken in the UI&UX to make the product presentation more intuitive for the customer and thus increase usability in both the front end and the back end.

Automation of release information

A good example of process automation is the release process for new versions, which is very important for VGR's products and takes place on a regular basis.

This process was previously maintained very manually by the editorial team in the backend. This process has been fundamentally revised with its own "Release" content element, which displays the corresponding release information for the respective products or product groups in the right places on the website. This means that the editorial team can rely on the "Release" element and maintain the information there in the backend and can be sure that information such as new features are displayed for the right products.

Automation of translations with memoQ

VGR is a global company that sells its products worldwide. Translations naturally play a major role for the editorial team. This process was also automated as part of the relaunch.

Content from Neos is automatically transferred via an interface to the translation software memoQ and automatically synchronized into a separate workspace in Neos.

There, the content can be checked if necessary and then published. This automation facilitates the creation of content and its translation. A significant efficiency gain for the VGR editorial team.

Of course there are also new features!

Release information for new software is very important for VGR, but the data is not only processed on the website, it is also exported to be imported into other applications. The corresponding export was developed for the relaunch.

A form construction kit is also intended to support the work of editors and facilitate the creation of multi-level forms.

For the newsletter a Cleverreach connection was developed for the newsletter and the entire newsletter registration is managed in Neos. This enables consistent data management with all the functions of a modern CMS.

In general, the product, solution and training pages were revised with the help of our partner agency for design, UI & UX in order to increase usability for site visitors.

The search function, a core element of any modern website, was also upgraded and revised. It is based on Elasticsearch. A faceted search was implemented, which significantly improves searching and finding product information on the website.

VGR and punkt.de - cooperation pays off!

The automation of processes is a core competence of punkt.de GmbH. Understanding and thinking through the relevant processes in order to translate them into a meaningful application requires a great deal of knowledge about the customer and its solutions and products as well as close coordination. Only then can the processes be implemented profitably, e.g. for the editorial department. In our view, digitizing processes prematurely without questioning them does not create any added value.

Together with VGR, we succeeded in establishing a "single source of truth" as part of the relaunch. All information that is important for the editorial team can be managed in one place (Neos) by a small number of editors without the need for complicated manual processes. This saves resources and nerves in editorial work, which can focus more on content than on processes.
